Synopsis

Luke Breit's poems sound with his talking voice, a voice full of compassion, honesty, sensitivity, remembrance, stilled passions and passing life, and somehow all like parts of a novel never written.

About the Author

Luke Breit was an American poet, editor, and political activist who became a central figure in the Second San Francisco Renaissance and the Sacramento literary scene. Born in New York City, he was the son of Harvey Breit, a prominent editor at the New York Times Book Review, and Alice Morris, the literary editor of Harper's Bazaar. Growing up among the New York literati, he eventually served as a driver for Norman Mailer during Mailer's 1969 mayoral run. Breit was a key participant in the revitalization of Beatitude magazine in the 1970s, serving as the editor for several issues, including the pivotal No. 21. His poetic style was minimalist and observational, earning high praise from literary giants like Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who described his work as sounding like a "voice full of compassion," and Mailer, who called him the "most reliable poet" for making readers feel good. In addition to his writing, Breit was deeply involved in California politics. He served as a political consultant for various campaigns and eventually became the Deputy Director of the Assembly Democratic Caucus in Sacramento. He spent much of his later life in Mendocino County and Sacramento, where he served as President of the Board for the Sacramento Poetry Center. Friends and fellow poets remember him for his passionate involvement in both coastal culture and state politics.
