The poems have been selected for their representative qualities as well as for their literary qualities. The selection includes many of the most highly regarded debate poems from middle English literature, including "Winner and Waster", "The Parliament of the Three Ages", and "Death and Life". Also included are the best of the body and soul debates and several poems from the English bird-debate tradition; alliterative debates; lovers dialogues; and didactic and satiric debates.
