Grade 3-4-Popular as the figure is, a cowboy is the sum total of all his actions and costume parts. But take him apart-what he does, why he does it, and how and why his attire works for him-and children will come to know the man as they did not know him before. Hence-the joy, the fun, the surprises of Christian's text and Lyle Miller's full-and half-page drawings. The prose is in short, pithy statements; and that's it. No wading through extraneous verbiage to get a point. Readers can linger along the way-or read through fast; and the text is informative enough to go back to, and go back yet again for another delightful read.

Following the cowboy on the trail, Christian explains how he used each item of clothing as well as his bedroll and the contents of his pockets. The text follows the 1976 edition, with larger print for easier reading. The new illustrations, shaded pencil drawings, are quite effective.
