PROLOGUE
The white lights were nearly blinding Joe Yamka as he tried to squint past them through the darkness to the thousands of people gathered in the Los Angeles auditorium. Sitting in the solitude of the shadows cast deliberately on the stage, he was not alone. Beside him were the five men that had served with such commitment, dedication, and purpose that, if not for their efforts, this moment would not have been possible. The murmur of the crowd began to increase in anticipation of the occasion and the speech that would soon be delivered. Joes gaze went to the faces of those men sitting beside him, the Board of Directors. He studied their faces and, although they were now drawn with the lines of age, he could still see a youthful enthusiasm fueled by the thrill of accomplishment that only a relatively short time ago would not have seemed possible. He reflected on the wisdom of the group gathered beside him. It was wisdom that had been bought with the price of years, yet covered up by the fear of what those same years would bring, the end of life. Until a short time ago none of them had ever looked at the good side of growing old... the gift of wisdom. This gift would have been lost if not for the collective realization that there is life right up to the grave, as long as we choose to live it. Joes eyes fell on the empty chair at the end of the stage. The one that was missing. How much he would have enjoyed this moment. The American flags lining the stage behind them, the red, white, and blue streamers hanging from the ceiling, and the bands playing would have thrilled the patriot who should have been occupying the seat at the end. Joes thoughts were jolted back to the present as the crowd of people let out a cheer and Hail to the Chief began to play. The Board of Directors rose to their feet as they had been instructed to do at the rehearsal, their faces glowing with pride and excitement as they watched the Secret Service secure the aisle leading up to the side of the stage; the President of the United States of America stepped onto the same platform that they were now occupying. As the President stopped and threw an enthusiastic wave that raised the cheering to a resounding pitch, Joe glanced back over his shoulder once again at his colleagues, whose eyes shone with tears that had broken loose and fallen down their rugged faces. Joe knew he was experiencing success as he stood basking in accomplishment, sharing this moment with those he cared about beside him. The President turned his attention away from the crowd and moved toward the men at the opposite end of the stage. Breaking away from the protocol that had been presented in the rehearsal, he extended his hand to Joe Yamka and with a hearty grasp gave a warm thank you that thrilled Joe to the center of his being. He could hardly comprehend that he was shaking hands with the President of the United States, who warmly greeted each of the Board of Directors and then, moving past the empty chair, stopped, as if he were picturing the one who should have been there. He turned, throwing up a wave to the crowd, which again brought thunderous cheers as he moved to the podium at center stage. The deafening roar fell to a spellbinding silence as the crowd awaited the Presidents message. The power and impact of the occasion forced Joe's thoughts back three and a half years to the very beginning of this moment.
