About the Author:
Although born in Rhode Island, Ellis Derry is a dedicated New Jerseyite. He has lived all but the first 5 years of his life in New Jersey. Mr. Derry is a graduate of North Plainfield High School and Gettysburg College. During WWII he served in the Pacific Theatre, and he remained in the Active Reserve at the end of the war, retiring after 22 years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In his study of New Jersey history, Mr. Derry became aware that nothing had been written about the state's many old churches. To fill this void, he wrote Old and Historic Churches of New Jersey Volume 2 in 1994 and now Volume 1 continues in this tradition with the fascinating histories of 23 more churches from throughout New Jersey.
