This beautifully crafted volume was designed by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the construction of "the most important single historic landmark in the entire state". John Ray Skates, professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi and a native Mississippian who has written extensively on the state's history, was chosen to provide the text, while photographs and illustrations were carefully selected by the department's museum staff. The result is a fine blend which should have a broad appeal to Mississippians generally and to others beyond the state interested in how one historic capitol escaped fire and the wrecking ball to which many of its sisters fell around the turn of the century, ultimately undergoing a carefully managed renovation as a state museum.
