Synopsis

With the help of her aunt, Kathryn Hypes, who taught in a one-room school, Maxine Scarbro has compiled a wonderful collection of games and songs that were traditionally played back in the days of the one-room schoolhouse. The book includes such favorites as Blind Man s Bluff and Hot Potato, to lesser-known games such as Grandma Brown Died, Hindu Tag, and Bad Man. Some of these games can be played indoors, some outdoors, some in the snow, and some just about anywhere.

Review

Publication: THE CHARLESTON GAZETTE Published: 07/15/1992 Headline: KID'S GAMES Byline: CONNIE SHEARER Here are a few of the games described in "One Room School Games: Children's Games of Yesteryear," by Maxine Sewell Scarbro. Ruth and Jacob Ruth is It. The Ruth player is blindfolded and put in the circle made by other players' clasped hands. Silently, the circle players push one from the circle into the center with Ruth. That player is Jacob. Jacob calls "Ruth.' Quickly and a quietly as possible, Jacob moves to somewhere else in the circle. Ruth seeks Jacob and may call "Jacob' at any time. Jacob answers "Ruth." When Ruth tags Jacob, then Ruth must identify who Jacob is. If two guesses are wrong, Ruth is still It. If Jacob is identified correctly, Jacob becomes Ruth and is blindfolded and the game goes on. Wink, or Winkum You form a circle of chairs with one player seated in every chair but one. A player stands behind every chair including the vacant one. The player standing behind the vacant chair winks at a seated player to come and fill the vacant chair. Then he, in turn, winks at someone to fill his chair. The object is to keep all the chairs filled. Going to New Orleans All the players sit in a circle. One starts by saying, "I'm going to New Orleans and I'm going to take my guitar." Another says they are going to take their horse and another their hat, etc. Then the first says he is going to play his guitar. Everyone is then going to play their item. The second will then ride his horse and everyone is going to ride his item. The third will wear his hat and everyone is going to wear their item. Andy Over, (or Ante Over) A group of children stand on each side of the schoolhouse. One group throws a ball over the building as they yell, "Andy over!" Somebody on the opposite side tries to catch the ball and runs to the other side to join that team if he catches it. The side with the largest number at the end of the game wins. A softball is usually used in this game. --Charleston Gazette
