Grade 2-4-- Although Naro the Ancient gets top billing, the central character is her son, Naro the Younger, who enters the unfinished universe his mother left, using power and knowledge to make life possible. Inspired by an Oceanic creation story, this telling falls well short of the concision and poetic force of myth. If events in myth are to seem inevitable, here readers feel they are merely arbitrary; the narrative doesn't move forward inexorably, but halts and wanders. Stylistic awkwardness (" 'The earth and sky have not been separated,' he said exasperated.") is a further impediment. Joyce, apparently reluctant to face a central moment--when the younger creative power slays the older--makes matricide appear accidental.
