Edited by Abe Levitsky, Ph.D., this book is based on transcripts of training workshops conducted by the late James Simkin, Ph.D., a long-time associate of Frederick Perls and a founder of the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Los Angeles.

Jim Simkin died of leukemia in 1984, 64 years old and at the height of his powers. Jim had studied with and then co-led therapy and training groups with Frederick (Fritz) Perls, but he developed his own style, which was more methodical and less flamboyant than Perls. In the last ten years of his life he provided psychotherapy training to psychologists, psychiatrists and clinical social workers who came from all over the world to study with him in his training center on the Big Sur coast.
