In 1971 Dickson was awarded a trip to Italy as winner of the English Division of Poesia Gradara. In 1990, he received a National Endowment for the Arts grant for poetry. When he was 19 he entered the grain business and stayed there for over forty years, mostly as a member of the Chicago Board of Trade. During that time he also operated a grain elevator and a commodity futures trading business. In 1980, when his first book of poetry, Victoria Hotel, received a Friends of Literature award, he left the grain business to write. His Waving At Trains has taken whole train platforms of readers along with him. Now this newest book is stirring music never heard before.
