Traditional interpretations of the book of Daniel equate the subject matter of Daniel 7 with that of Daniel 2. Many years of study of the original text convinced the authors that this approach did not satisfy many interpretive problems. In only one respect do the two chapters overlap: the iron and iron-mixed-with-clay in the image of Daniel 2 coincides with the "diverse beast" of Daniel 7. Chapter 7, however, gives much more detailed information about this future world power.

A major portion of current interpretation of biblical prophecy is drawn from the commentary on Daniel by Jerome (342-420 A.D.). Modern writers have copied his scenario (time line and events) practically en toto. Jerome, in turn, had relied principally on Porphyry's interpretation of world events. Porphyry (233-305 A.D.), a pagan philosopher who wrote vitriolic essays entitled, "Against the Christians", argued that the book of Daniel, rather than divinely inspired revelation by the 6th century B.C. prophet, Daniel, was a forgery written in the 2nd century B.C., and therefore based much of his interpretation on that premise.
