Review

Publisher's Weekly says: "Walsh leads readers on an introductory excursion into the Bible, using critical approaches to reading the scriptures, major features of every biblical book, key biblical terms and important phases of the translation of the Bible. Questions, an extensive bibliography and a glossary provide more road markers." -- Publisher Comments

While this is a textbook primarily designed to introduce students to biblical literature, it is equally suitable for any reader who wishes to study The Bible independently. Dr. Richard G. Walsh has created a unique, accessible and up-to-date study guide which blends literary, historical and theological perspectives in an easy-to-read format. Numerous charts and insets highlight and clarify textual content. Bold print calls attention to important issues and terms. Each chapter includes questions for review and suggestions for additional reading and reflection. Appendices I, II and III offer reading guides to the major and minor prophets and the Pauline letters as well as a detailed topical reference. An extensive glossary and bibliography provide a wealth of helpful and informative material. Contemporary readers will particularly appreciate the ways in which the author connects scripture with today's narrative themes. Dr. Walsh is Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion and the Director of the Honors Program at Methodist College, Fayetteville, North Carolina. He encourages students to be adventuresome in their study and discussion of The Bible. He concludes that while The Bible has admittedly lost influence in modern society, it remains relevant by offering an "alternative imagination" and by its ongoing ability to illuminate and challenge our modern world view. -- From Independent Publisher
