Take a retreat and read quietly to your heart's content about the spirituality of Walt Whitman...the way monks make corporate decisions...what it takes to be a monk...Fr. Hale's ideas on men and women... the Esalen Institute...Christianity in China... The Annunciation... Washing the Feet... Elizabeth the cat who shares his cell on the mountaintop... This is grounded spirituality for too-busy post-industrial humans!
Dear Denis, The two copies of the book arrived at Fonte Avellana yesterday, just an hour before I left for here, Camaldoli; thus I was able at least to glance at them, before giving one copy to our General, the other to our Rome superior, the other monks thumbing through them also. The front and back covers are very handsome indeed, thank you so much. The black and white photos within have a kind of reserved, mysterious quality that isn't that bad, it seems to me. Thank you so much for all your work in enabling the book to appear. Our good friend Amber Sumrall (quoted on the back cover) is arranging for a joint reading in a bookstore in Santa Cruz in February. We shall explore possibilities in Berkeley also. Our last newsletter, which has a circulation of about 3,000, had a good announcement regarding the book. Some of our friends have indicated that they find Amazon.com to be the convenient way to book shop. I see that Amazon has the book listed as still to appear ("in September"). I wonder if we can help them along, also with supporting reviews etc. I have an idea for a companion volume, but focused on urban monastic contemplative life (given that I shall soon be spending extended periods in our Berkeley Incarnation Monastery). So many people live their Christian vocation in an urban context, it might be helpful to explore how we as monks also have communities in that setting (and have for many centuries), how we attempt to keep focused and contemplative in such a context, utilizing also the best that a city can provide. But these reflections are just at the beginning (though I already have loads of ideas, and want to start getting feedback from our many friends who live in an urban context!) Again, know of our gratitude and prayers. In our one Lord, Robert
