This stunning collection of historic and contemporary photos is a testament to photography's ability to reproduce in detail the grandeur and preciousness of the natural world. Since the medium's beginnings, it often has been used to express the photographer's wonder and fascination with the undeveloped landscapefrom great mountain ranges to the intimate country garden. Jeffrey's introduction takes us from early European photographers Fox Talbot and Charles Marville through 19th century American topographers Carleton E. Watkins and Timothy O'Sullivan up to the current work of John Pfahl and others. Along the way, Jeffrey convincingly links the esthetics of each generation of photographers to the kind of pictures they produced.
