Carolyn Felux, an educator for thirty-four years, is the Associate Director of Professional Development for Math Solutions, providing direction and support to the organization’s programs. Paula Snowdy, an educator for thirty-three years, is the Director of Client Relations for Math Solutions Professional Development. She designs and provides K–8 professional development for district-level administrators, school-based math leadership teams, and teachers across the country.
Math coaches and specialists assigned the task of improving mathematics instruction face an enormous and complex challenge. Most coaches take on this responsibility with a title and a charge, but seldom with a road map. The Math Coach Field Guide: Charting Your Course provides just the kind of guidance needed to help coaches in this demanding and often undefined role as they strive to support teachers in their teaching of math. In this collection of eleven articles, veteran math coaches share their expertise, providing glimpses into the unique trials, false starts, and successes they have experienced in their positions. The authors ask and answer such questions as What makes a math coach effective? What is important for a coach to think about in the role of supporting both eager and reluctant teachers? and What pitfalls do math coaches encounter and what can they do about them? Though The Math Coach Field Guide was written by coaches for other coaches, teacher leaders, school administrators, and mathematics supervisors will all find it to be an invaluable resource.
