This volume is a sequel to Troy Wilson Organ's Philosophy and the Self: East and West. Both books assume that a system of philosophy adequate for the methods and insights of both Eastern and Western traditions. In the earlier volume the author compares how Eastern and Western philosophers understand the human being as thinker, as speaker, as knower, and as a self. In this volume he begins with the premise that human beings live in the same reality but not in the same world. A world is defined as a creative response of the self-knowing animal to objective reality. The Self in Its Worlds: East and West is an examination of the four worlds that artists, scientists, politicians, poets, prophets, and priests inhabit-that is, the natural world, the social world, the aesthetic world, and the religious world. Considering th ways in which Eastern and Western peoples construct their worlds, the book encourages its readers to labor for a human community in which Eastern and Western are complementary, rather than contradictory, adjectives. The section entitled "Beyond God and Evil" is an argument that Western theisms and theodicies must be transcended if the West is to establish harmonious relations with the East. A Western philosopher, Organ persuasively advances his belief in the need for synthesis and his certainty that West without East is more precarious than East without West.
