Purportedly an inside view of amateur athletics covering issues relevant to all Olympic sports, this is instead a personal memoir of the author's experience (not good) as the first executive director of the U.S. Cycling Federation from 1983 to 1986. It is extremely detailed, gossipy, political, and whiny. There is not much "inside information" to be gleaned, just a lot of unpleasant complaining. The premise is that the cyclists succeed in spite of the "guidance" provided by their governing body.
