Synopsis

On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles' radio dramatization of the science-fiction classic The War of the Worlds caused a legendary panic among listeners who became convinced that a Martian invasion was in progress. Forty-five years and one day later, on October 31, 1983, a similar phenomenon occurred on Cape Cod when Steven Thomas Oney broadcast his suspense thriller "The Caller on Line One," only the second installment of his Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theater public radio series. On that Halloween night, Oney's suspense thriller prompted a flood of calls to the local police, as well as to the radio station, and created a traffic jam outside a post office.

Since then, Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theater has developed a loyal following among public radio listeners across the country. As creator, writer, producer, and director of the series, Steven Thomas Oney upholds—and gracefully updates—the grand old tradition of shows such as The Shadow from the golden age of radio. Each radio play is written with wit, style, and plenty of chills, and each fetures original music, realistic sound effects, and a full cast of characters. It's riveting, spine-tingling, whodunit fun.

From AudioFile

"It's a foggy night on old Cape Cod--a perfect night for a mystery. . . ." So begins each of the three episodes of this public radio show. These tales are perfect for audio--entertaining and suspenseful. The tone and style of these mysteries, which hearken back to the golden age of radio, are enhanced by original music and excellent sound effects. The weak part of this presen-tation, however, is the narration. The actors' characterizations, voices and styles range from very professional to embarrassingly amateurish. Still, if you're in the mood for a mystery and it's a cold, foggy night, this audio presentation will keep you alert. M.R. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
