A reader's edition, modernized language ("you" for "thee," etc.) and glossary for unfamiliar words. The Merry Wives of Windsor was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth to continue the adventures of Sir John Falstaff following the introduction of the Falstaff with Prince Hal in his wild days. The Wives, however, is almost unrelieved fun, as Falstaff's plans go awry as soon as he sets them out, and he ends up much chastened, but probably not reformed. This is one of seven Shakespeare plays with transgender activity, and this time it includes Falstaff himself, who must don a disguise to escape an irate husband.

About the Author:
William Shakespeare was a thorough theater person, actually helping to create theater as we know it, breaking from the Aristotelian strictures. We are fairly certain of birth and death dates, with a few other facts of his family life, and appearance of plays, yet there are tantalizing gaps in our knowledge of his life that we must imagine through his plays -- time spent in Italy and other places at a time of change and challenge for Britain, withstanding the Spanish Armada (Shakespeare was 24 at the time).
