Mary Ellen ("Mel") Harte is the author of two previous books: Simple Lace and Other Beaded Jewelry Patterns (For Ages 7 to 70) and A Treasury of Beaded Jewelry: Bead Stringing Patterns For All Ages, both very successful books published by Eagle's View Publishing. Mel has also written several beadwork articles for Beadwork magazine. She is a biologist, mother and craftsperson whose passion for pattern overflows into her other passions - beadwork, folk dancing and wildflowers. An avid collector of ethnic textiles and crafts (her collection includes pieces from her travels in Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America), in 1990 she attempted to re-create a Native American beaded flower ring and pass the skill to her daughter. Deciphering existing bead patterns and creating her own, she eventually began teaching beadwork and then writing how-to bead stringing books. Mel grew up on Long Island, fascinated by the nearby sea and its treasures. A lover of nature, she studied marine science at a nearby college and then continued her studies in Hawaii at an international multicultural center, which flamed her interest in the crafts, cuisines, dances and textiles of other cultures. In 1981 she moved to Berkeley, CA where she developed a fascination for beading patterns and collecting beadwork. Her interests also expanded to include learning about and photographing wildflowers, culminating in the production of a photographic guide CD of Colorado Wildflowers, “What’s That Wildflower?”. She currently migrates between Berkeley, CA and the Colorado Rockies.
