Chapter 1: ACT AS YOUR OWN CONTRACTOR-- This chapter is going to tell you some of what you might expect if you are going to build on your own or act as your own contractor. The first thing I want to tell you is, Don't be intimidated by building on your own! Most people feel they don't have the skills to pull it off, but they do . . . you do! The reality is that everyone practices these skills every single day of their lives. If you can run a household, office, classroom, business or just your own life, you can run a job. The whole key is to learn how things are done, then organize them. I'll tell you how they're done in this book. What I recommend you do if you are planning a project of any size, is to stop sitting around watching just anything on TV and try to find a home improvement show to watch (mine). Or, take a class on being your own contractor. Read books about home repair, (mine). Listen to home improvement shows on the radio (mine). If you're an average person without any building skills, I promise you can do it. Educate yourself first then start. Before long you'll feel the confidence creep, then rush into your body and it will become easy for you. That's how I started.
