Provides three hundred patterns for cross-stitchery, embroidery, and needlepoint

Focusing on sources of inspiration for needlework projects, this nicely photographed work suggests that patterns can be adapted from almost anywhere. The author, who has written several other needlework and quilting books, offers more than 300 examples of completed projects, line drawings (to be traced and transferred to fabric), and a limited number of charted patterns on such themes as countries, Victoriana, seasons, geometrics, nursery designs, and Christmas. While chatty discussions inform the reader how to capture and interpret needlework ideas, there are no instructions for the illustrated projects and no step-by-step visual examples of how to transform a particular picture or object into a stylized design appropriate for needlework. These omissions may frustrate needleworkers. Not an essential purchase.

Stitchers without enough confidence in their own creativity will find Lawther's 300 examples a good reference; in truth, those blessed with the determination to copy from finished examples will find the color photographs more intriguing in design than the templates. All the traditional sources of patterns are tapped, then segmented into 11 sections, each with four to six pages of outlines to trace. No surprises here; her abstract motifs, for example, imitate art deco and art nouveau styles, and nursery designs follow the trains, sky, and sea patterns. This book is intended for the stitcher with at least a rudimentary knowledge of cross-stitch, embroidery, and needlepoint, since Lawther summarizes, in the last chapter, generic information about materials and techniques.
