Feng Shui for Retailers By Linda Cahan Reviewed by Martin M. Pegler Published in RETAIL design, May 2006 I have known Linda Cahan for a long time and always appreciated her talents as a visual merchandiser and as someone who could teach what she practices so well. Thus, I was totally delighted to see her new book, Feng Shui for Retailers, and to be able to recommend it most heartily. Feng Shui, for the very few of you out there who may not have heard of it, is all about the positive energy in a space and how the placement of objects in the space can affect this flow of good energy that produces happiness and success. And, since retailers are involved in placement , the placing of fixtures/fittings, of furniture, of merchandise, of locating things and objects, and since all retailers are interested in getting positive results from their enterprises, what Linda Cahan s book has to offer should be of interest to them. Now I must honestly admit in writing, I do not absolutely buy all of the Feng Shui practices. I do believe that the ideas and recommendations set forth by Linda really make sense for retailers. Her advice is solid and on target for visual merchandisers and store designers since so much of what she offers is so logical and down-to-earth. The book is divided into simple, easy to read chapters profusely illustrated with charming little thumbnail sketches and diagrams provided by the author. There are feature squares that highlight important concepts such as Energy! You ll see a lot of his word. While I might refer to it as Chi or Qui, just to mix it up, the English term energy is what you ll see most often. Energy has many meanings. The simple, scientific explanation of energy is the capacity of something to work. In this book, energy is referred to as the force that resides I all things, alive or manmade. She talks about arranging your store so that energy flows smoothly and unobstructed to make the space more pleasurable for you, your staff and your customers. Now, isn t that what it takes to have a successful retail establishment? Linda Cahan leads readers in a conversational tone through some of the murkier elements of Feng Shui, the symbolic elements and such, which the reader may or may not buy into, but then she balances that with crystal clear logic and know-how about store design and how to merchandise a space. And, in case you missed anything, she ends each chapter with a review in which she clearly states the principles and concepts stated in that chapter. For those who enjoy being rested there is a quiz, just to make sure that the reader understood that what can be a mystic experience is also a logical step by step journey to better store design. The book was published by ST Media Group of Cincinnati, Ohio and can be purchased directly from them. So become a believer, try it! I m sure that you will not only like it and become intrigued by the concepts, but since Feng Shui is rapidly gaining adherents around the world, it is something you should know about. Linda Cahan s book, Feng Shui for Retailers, is an excellent guidebook to this new realm for new retailers. --RETAIL design, May 2006, Reviewer: Martin M. Pegler
