Recounted by the excerpts from the journals, diaries and books of the discoverers, explorers, foreign visitors, the founder of Yerba Buena, and the contemporary and reminiscent descriptions of those who were there and witnessed the transformation of San Francisco from hamlet to metropolis: Costansó, Ayala, Font, Vancouver, Lamgsdorff, Roquefeuil, Kotzebue, Beechey, Richardson, Simpson, Kemble, and others. Includes many historic maps, charts, illustrations, and the first two surveys of the town of Yerba Buena.
