Synopsis
My purpose is to show what John contributed to the war, in order to better preserve his memory. A great number of his fellow soldiers spoke well of him, saying he was efficient and always at the post of duty, that he was a gallant and meritorious officer, that he was considered by his fellow officers as one of the brightest and quickest in action and in intellect. General David Gregg noted, " I can say that Kester was competent in every respect, and I feel the utmost confidence in his judgment." Surgeon William Phillips felt that, " his bravery was not excelled by any man in the army." these statements are all the more impressive when we bear in mind that they were given in writing more than twenty years after the war was over.
