Grade 3-6 --This book on the origins of place names proceeds in no apparent logical order. On page one, readers are greeted with Memphis, Alexandria, and New South Wales. An alphabetical table of contents provides the means for looking up each entry, as does a subject index, but entries appear to have been chosen randomly. New Jersey is included but not New York, Zimbabwe but not Oregon. Illustrations vary from archival to contemporary, color to black and white and do little to enhance the text. The information provided on the places selected may be interesting, but this book lacks the focus or inclusiveness that would make it a reliable reference.
