Uncle Kawaiola's Dream: A Hawaiian Story is an `äina-based story that focuses on lo`i kalo restoration on Maui. Uncle Kawaiola tells his dream story to his niece Naupaka, and nephew Ho`äla. Based on his passion to restore his great grandfather Nahau's `äina, Uncle Kawaiola faces challenges that he overcomes based on Hawaiian cultural values of laulima and ohana. He teaches his niece and nephew that achieving a goal requires the help of one s family and community, and he learns from his mentor Kalima that taking small steps toward a goal is the way to reach it. The story is inspiring, healing, and grounding. It teaches the importance of lokahi and paepae that create good, strong principles. This story will help all readers reconnect with Hawai`i and Hawaiian culture. Although a children s story, Uncle Kawaiola's Dream can be enjoyed by young and old alike.

From the Inside Flap:
Uncle Kawaiola’s Dream: A Hawaiian Story is a narrative about a young Hawaiian’s passion to restore lo‘i kalo (taro patches) on his great grandfather Nahau’s ‘äina (land). Uncle Kawaiola tells his dream story to his young niece Naupaka and nephew Ho‘äla. The story focuses both on Uncle Kawaiola’s passion to restore lo‘i kalo, and on the importance of perpetuating a Hawaiian way of life that focuses on cultural values and traditions. The oil paintings that accompany the story illustrate central ideas and feelings about Uncle Kawaiola’s desire to fulfill his dream “in small steps,” as his mentor Kalima advises.Uncle Kawaiola’s Dream stresses the value of having goals. Equally important, the story represents the strengths that come from working together toward fulfilling those goals.A Glossary of Hawaiian words and A Study Guide for Understanding and Learning can be found at the end of the book. They are included to help readers understand the story and learn more about Hawaiians from the past and present.
