From Booklist:
Gr. 4-7. Large, close-up mug shots of irresistible, whiskered marine animals will easily draw readers into this informative, picture-book-size revision of a 1993 title, which features improved visuals and design and expanded back matter. Detailed, highly readable text describes sea otter physiology, habits, habitats, and life cycle. Final sections examine the differences among otter species, threats posed by pollution and predators, and biologists' efforts to preserve the sea otter population. Leon doesn't shy away from the more bizarre realities of otter behavior, such as the violent mating rituals that leave females' noses "scarred and bloodied," and younger readers may have plenty of questions after reading these frank chapters. A brief list of suggested readings and Web sites points them to further resources for answers. An excellent choice for reports and browsing. Gillian Engberg
