Grade 3-6-- A handy lightweight guide to take along on trips to Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and Southern California. Lovett organizes her text according to the chronological geologic development of the areas. She writes in an interesting and factual style that gives a real sense of history and, in some cases, elements of mystery. She also covers important environmental legislation, safety factors, ethnic values, and experiments or things to do along the way. This well-written guidebook makes history come alive. Strock's blue and brown pen-and-ink drawings are very loose, but they do capture the waves of heat, dunes, rock crags, and land formations. Interspersed are a few historic photographs and simple maps. Care has been taken to italicize important safety features and points and to put new terms and place names in bold type. Some animal and geological features are omitted or very lightly glossed over, but young explorers might also miss those sights if they have their noses buried too deeply in a field guide.
