The digital standard known as the Global System for Mobile (GSM) has captured a large share of the global cellular market. This book aims to bridge the gap between a reader’s basic knowledge of telecommunications and the complexities of the 5000-page GSM technical specification. It describes the system as a whole, covering all aspects of the standard, including mobile stations, switching equipment, the radio interface, infrastructure, transmission methods, and signaling protocols. System architects involved in the design of personal communications systems will find the book to be a complete description of the GSM communications system. It also may serve as a general introduction to digital cellular systems.

Both Michel Mouly and Marie-Bernadette Pautet graduated from Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications in Paris. Pautet also received a master of science degree from Stanford University.
Both authors have been actively involved in the development and evolution of the GSM standard since 1983, in particular in the specification of signaling, security, and radio transmission standards.
Pautet was a member of the permanent GSM expert team responsible for managing the GSM specification, and she chaired the sub-group of the GSM standardization committee that deals with radio interface signaling. Mouly has chaired standardization groups since 1988. He is currently (under contract from Nortel) chairman of SMG.3, which is the group in charge of GSM architecture and protocols, as well as GSM evolution toward UMTS.
Pautet and and Mouly previously worked for France Télécom, and Mouly later joined Matra Communication. They are currently both private telecommunications engineer consultants who focus on GSM systems.
The book is well written, accurate, and clearly understandable. The diagrams are all clearly depicted and easily understood. -- IEEE Personal Communications, April 1995
