About the Author

Theodor Fontane (1819-98)lived much of his life in Berlin, first as a journalist (covering the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71), and turning to the writing of fiction at the age of 58. He is the author of 17 novels and novellas, six of them set in Berlin.

Review

The immense pleasures of the novel lie in the author's cool-headed approach to what, in other hands, could have been a forgettable melodrama. . . . The book is filled with comparable moments of small facts transfigured into something magical. --The New Yorker

As much a psychological as a social realist, the author is interested in the emotional conflicts that arise between individual desire and social conditioning, class expectations and personality. --Review of Contemporary Fiction
