Synopsis
This is a modern English version of Jonathan Edwards(1703-1758) famous "Treatise Concerning the Religious Affections." Arguably the greatest theologian of American history, Edwards wrote this treatise during the times of the first Great Awakening. He preached a series of sermons in 1742-43 dealing with the subject of distinguishing between true and false religious experience. The Treatise was the text of these sermons revised for publication in 1746; now abridged and presented in this edition in contemporary English. What troubles the Christian church would have escaped, if believers had kept to what Scripture teaches about a true experience of salvation! Edwards was masterful at understanding this and explaining it.

The spiritual value of Jonathan Edwards' 'Religious Affections' can hardly be exaggerated. But the difficulty of the subject matter, combined with Edwards' tedious writing style and 18th century vocabulary, makes digesting it quite challenging for the modern reader. I am delighted that Christian Focus is releasing this modern edition of Edwards' classic work. Read this book. Let it read you. You will be challenged, convicted, and changed. I commend it highly. Some books from past centuries have proved their timelessness. Jonathan Edwards' "Treatise on Religious Affections" is a perfect example. But sadly, that gets obscured by their time-bound language. So it's fantastic to have this wonderful book made accessible again. Edwards shows such humanity and realism as he tackles the issue of our emotional life. But he does so with great biblical clarity and charity, walking the tightrope between constraint and freedom. This is one of those books that every Christian should read more than once!
