Each chapter includes a geographical profile, chronology, essays on recent history and the economy, a statistical survey and full directory material with information on the constitution, government, defence and military, political organizations, foreign embassies, judicial systems, religion, the environment, culture, the media, finance, social welfare systems, trade and industry, transport, tourism and a select bibliography. The third part on the Commonwealth of Independent States comprises eleven essays covering aspects of political and economic affairs as well as the geographical, chronology, statistical and directory sections as with the other countries. In addition it includes shorter chapters on each of the Republics.

The volumes in this series (e.g., Africa South of the Sahara , Europa, 1992. 21st ed.; The Far East and Australasia , Europa, 1992. 23rd ed.) are used daily by librarians and library patrons alike. Now the publisher offers Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States , arguably the hottest region in the world for those interested in business, politics, or the environment. Each country or independent state is covered in its own chapter, using the following format: historical essay (current through 1991), statistical survey (current through 1989 or 1990), and directory of addresses for government bodies, trade associations, and the media. Sound familiar? The same format is used in the two-volume Europa Yearbook (Europa, 1992. 33d ed.), which covers the entire world. As one would expect, there is much duplication between the Yearbook and these regional surveys. However, the new title has enough unique aspects to warrant purchase. The historical essays are twice as long, and the chapters on former Yugoslavian and Soviet states do not yet appear in Europa Yearbook . Still, given the price, libraries that already carry the Yearbook or International Monetary Fund and United Nations publications may want to pass on this title. Recommended for public and academic libraries with strong area studies collections.
