Synopsis

Experienced walkers looking for something more demanding than the walks in our companion guidebook Walk & Eat Rhodes are sure to enjoy the tours and walks in Noel Rochford's classic guide to the island LANDSCAPES OF RHODES.

In an Internet blog published by UK national newspaper The Guardian, the following comment was made in answer to a reader's question asking where they can get a walking guide to Rhodes:

"The best guidebook for walkers is Noel Rochford's Landscapes of Rhodes (Sunflower), out of print but possibly obtainable second-hand or through Inter Library loans through your local library"

It is true that it has long been out of print in paperback (it was originally published in 1998), but in response to frequent requests from regular users of the series asking how they can get hold of a copy, Sunflower Books has now reissued the book in a Kindle version, though we must make it clear that this is a reissue, not a new edition. (It hasn't been possible for Noel Rochford to produce an updated edition, as he now lives in Australia, so some degree of initiative and expertise will be of help in retracing some of his longer walking routes. For example there may be paths that have become overgrown, or waymarks mentioned in the book that have faded and not been repaired.) Experienced hikers will gain much satisfaction from the challenge of rediscovering Noel's routes.

The car tour routes should if anything be improved, with what used just to be motorable tracks in many instances now upgraded to surfaced roads with the aid of EU money. Moreover, the book has been enhanced with many new colour photographs and maps specially tailored for use with tablet devices or smart phones. In addition, up to date (summer 2013) bus timetables and fare tables are now included in the book.

This Kindle version can be used on Kindles, iPads, smart phones and most tablet devices or even on any desktop or laptop computer by using the free Kindle app obtainable from Amazon. The book is a worthwhile buy for the photographs alone, which provide a tempting foretaste of the island's attractions for anyone planning to holiday there! The book contains over 60 colour photographs of places to visit, plus illustrations of some of the plant life to be found on Rhodes. There are 30 large-scale walking maps specially designed for ease of use on tablet devices and smart phones. A touring map of the entire island is provided, together with a link to the website of Sunflower Books enabling the user to download free of charge a high-definition version suitable for printing out.
