The Ipswich Plan was proposed in the early sixties, drawn up in detail in the mid sixties and finally cancelled as the decade drew to a close. If it had been carried through it would have increased the population of the Borough from 114,000 to nearly 200,000. The planning consultants said it would make Ipswich the most modern town in East Anglia. Many welcomed the idea, claiming it would be the making of the town, but others were less enthusiastic, fearing that such a radical upheaval would bring too many problems. Ipswich has continued to grow and change, even if not quite so quickly as was once thought possible. The photographs in this book will hopefully serve as a reminder of how some parts of the town looked, nearly thirty years ago.
