Robilliard combines the waspishness of Dorothy Parker, with the confrontational bravado of Joe Orton. Born in the Channel Islands, he moved to London in the 1970’s to pursue his ambitions as an artist and poet. Untutored in both disciplines, his work had a unique freshness that it still maintains. David was discovered in the early 80’s by Gilbert and George (who published his first book Inevitable, later republished by The Bad Press), who described him as their favorite living writer. He has been the subject of a massive retrospective exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and his poetry continues to sustain cult status. The first Bad Press publication was Robilliard’s The Cat’s Pyjamas in 1991.
