From the introduction: It could easily be imagined that heralds, since the official granting of arms to others is their responsibility, might have been assiduous users of ex-libris themselves, but that is not the case. A good many major or minor luminaries who at some time inhabited the College of Arms in London or the Court of Lord Lyon in Edinburgh never bothered with them at all, and the same is true today. Others, especially in comparatively recent times, have used several; and one Hugh Stanford of London overindulged in such marks of ownership, but he designed most of them himself. Few exlibrists have made a specialisation of heralds' bookplates, but one who did, George Heath Viner (1866-1955) most appropriately donated his assemblage of them to the College of Arms in 1952 but his holdings were far from comprehensive.
