Memorials of the Easter Rising presents interesting insights into the major combatants on the republican side in the Easter Rising. As President Michael D. Higgins remarked at a ceremony in Buenos Aires on 12th October 2012, ’Commemoration of the past is important. It provokes in us reflection on core values and prompts us to learn from the past so as to more fully understand the present and thoughtfully plan for a better future.’ Noble words and sentiments are found on many of the monuments and plaques exhibited in Ray Bateson’s careful selection. Under Seán Mac Giolla Bríde’s Bronze bust on a limestone pedestal in Westport are his lofty words: ’No man can claim authority to barter away the immutable rights of nationhood; for Irishmen have fought, suffered, and died in defence of those rights.’ Terence MacSwiney’s words are on a plaque in Co. Wexford: ’It is not those who can inflict the most, but those that can suffer the most who will conquer.’ This is a book to dip into here and there, to learn about local people who made a significant contribution to the formation of this state with high aspirations and noble intentions. It promotes the preservation of all areas in Dublin that were associated with the Easter Rising for the historical, cultural and economic benefit of the city.
