About the Author

Simon Difford has been involved in most aspects of the drinks industry from running his own off licence and wholesale company to importing and brand creation, but is best known as a drinks writer and publisher. Simon founded CLASS Magazine in 1997, a title which became the leading UK style bar title before he sold it to William Reed Publishing to

prepare for the launch of his range of diffordsguide drinks related books in 2001.

Some are probably begged and borrowed from friends, others clipped from magazines and cookery books, while a good few are probably your own creations, attributable to inspired luck.

The same is true both for the professional cocktail bartender and for the home mixologist. This tome is a comprehensive compilation of the 2,000 cocktails I've collected to date and published over the past year in our diffordsguide quarterly bookazines.

I'd like to thank the many amateur cocktail makers and professional bartenders who've emailed me their recipes and suggestions. Some of the drinks I've included may have originally been created using brands other than those stated, or with slightly differing proportions. Occasionally I've 'adapted' recipes in order to make them simpler or to avoid obscure ingredients. I have endeavoured to credit drink inventors while making it clear that my adaptation varies slightly from their original creation. I'd be the first to admit that some of the recipes are better than others (most definitely including my own). Thus I've graded cocktails on a scale of one to five and discreetly indicated this score by dots above each drink's name.

Anyone looking to start a cocktail cabinet at home should begin with the fourteen 'Key Ingredients' featured in the opening pages. These are the most frequently used cocktail ingredients and by combining them with such easy-to-find ingredients as fruits and juices you will be able to make literally hundreds of drinks. This guide is intended not only to encourage more people to make and enjoy

cocktails at home but to help them appreciate them when drinking out. A great cocktail is as luxuriously satisfying as a fine wine, a vintage champagne or a family reserve cognac. However, while many have had the opportunity to taste a great wine, fairly few have ever experienced a truly
