One woman’s true story of war, love, and loss.
Magdalene De Lancey fought to save her husband’s life on the edge of the battlefield at Waterloo. American-born William was one of the first professional officers in the British army and the Duke of Wellington’s chief-of-staff.
Magdalene’s heartrending account of her struggle to nurse her husband was written as a letter to her brother and has a striking immediacy. Any woman who has ever waited for a husband at war or nursed the man she loves will empathize with Magdalene’s fears, hopes, and sorrow.

Lady Magdalene Hall married Colonel Sir William Howe de Lancey, Wellington's deputy quartermaster-general, in April 1815. After his death she returned to Britain and eventually remarried, but died shortly after the birth of her third child in 1822. Two of her descendants (her great-grandson and great-great grandson) died fighting in World Wars 1 and 2. Roberts appears regularly on British television and radio. He writes for The Sunday Telegraph and reviews history books and biography for that newspaper as well as The Spectator, Literary Review, Mail on Sunday, and Daily Telegraph. He is perhaps best known to transatlantic audiences for his seven-hour NBC broadcast with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric, of Princess Diana's funeral.
