A5, 44 page book published by Hunter and James. Designed by Wayne Daly. John MacLeans fourth book of photographs, Neighbourhood is available 31.7.09. Sixty-nine photographs taken in MacLean s immediate locality of Tooting Bec, south-west London, between March 1 2008 and May 24th 2009. The resulting book is part diary, part archive, part lament on the passage of time, part psychogeography and part playful push-and-pull of photographic conventions. Whilst making his Combines in the 1950 s, Robert Rauschenberg established a methodology: If I couldn't find material to do an artwork walking around the block once, I wouldn't do it. While most photographers look to new places to generate new work, why not, John reasoned, do the opposite and photograph the place that was most over-familiar and least far flung? Making photographs within a five minute walk of his house, what emerged over a period of 15 months were the new approaches that surface when a photographer, forced into a corner, has to photograph his way out.

About John Maclean Born in Buckinghamshire, John spent part of his childhood growing-up in Canada and the United States. He began using a camera at the age of 14 when he discovered the book "American Images", featuring the work of Garry Winogrand, Robert Frank, Lewis Baltz and John Gossage. After studying Mathematics, Physics and Geology, he went on to become a graduate in Photography at The University of Derby. He worked at The Royal College of Art for four years and then became a freelance photographer based in London. MacLean's photographs have been widely published in books and periodicals. In 2005, John produced the book 21 Recent Photographs and exhibited at View Gallery, London. A year later, new work was exhibited at Studio One, London. In 2008, 48 Recent Photographs was published: a photobook that represented a cross-section of work from his most extensive project to date: City. In the same year, his exhibition 'Brasilia' was held at The Architectural Association, London. In 2009, City: Book One was published. John MacLean. Neighbourhood. First edition 2009.
