Turning a clever electronic design into a successful commercial product is one of engineering’s most demanding challenges. Universities teach students how to design circuits, write embedded software, and build prototypes. Industry expects them to do something far harder: deliver a product that can be manufactured reliably, sold profitably, certified for safety and emissions, and supported in the field for years. That gap between theory and practice is where most new engineers struggle and where this book steps in.
From Prototype to Product is a practical, plain‑English guide to the real world of electronic product development. Drawing on more than thirty years of hands‑on experience and involvement in over thirty launched products, Seggy T. Segaran explains the full journey from first concept to commercial release. The book is packed with real examples, lessons learned, and the kinds of details that only appear after decades in industry.
The early chapters explore the design issues that catch out even experienced engineers: power supplies that behave differently under load, rechargeable batteries with hidden limitations, component tolerances that quietly undermine performance, and embedded software that must survive real‑world conditions rather than laboratory tests. Clear explanations and practical advice help readers avoid the common pitfalls that turn promising prototypes into expensive failures.
From there, the book moves into design for manufacture, the stage where many products succeed or fail. Readers learn how to choose enclosures, understand PCB technologies, and design assemblies that can be built economically and consistently. These chapters demystify the manufacturing process and show how small decisions made early in the design cycle can dramatically affect cost, reliability, and long‑term support.
A major section of the book is devoted to regulatory compliance, an area rarely covered in university courses but essential for any commercial product. Seggy explains electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, environmental regulations, and the creation of a Declaration of Conformity. These chapters give engineers the confidence to navigate CE marking, emissions testing, and safety approvals without fear or confusion.
The final part of the book focuses on project management and commercial realities. Topics include project control, production documentation, pricing, and the practicalities of working within ISO9001 quality systems. These chapters help engineers understand how products are costed, documented, reviewed, and supported, the business‑side knowledge that turns technical competence into professional capability.
Five appendices provide additional guidance on quality management, prototyping circuits, Pareto analysis, harmonised standards, and further reading. Together, they form a toolkit that engineers can return to throughout their careers.
From Prototype to Product is written for new graduates, early‑career engineers, and anyone preparing to design a product for the first time. It is also a valuable reference for educators, managers, and professionals who want to strengthen their understanding of the complete product‑development lifecycle. Clear, accessible, and grounded in real experience, this book equips readers not just to design electronics, but to deliver products that are robust, compliant, manufacturable, and commercially successful.

I have worked in the electronic manufacturing sector for 32 years. In the first 5 years I worked as a design engineer, using the then newly available 4-bit microcontrollers. I was also one of the first proud owners of an Acorn home computer. The following 4 years were spent gaining experience of managing teams as well as engaging with other departments like sales and marketing and getting a wider understanding of how an organisation really ticks. The next 24 years have been very spent starting and growing my own business. This has given me a wide range of experiences. I am a Princes Trust mentor and have helped numerous businesses over the last 8 years. I have 3 books published and available on Amazon. The latest one is titled "The Battle to get traffic to your website" and is aimed as an SEO primer for small business owners. Sales from my previous book "Starting and Running a PAT Testing business" has already generated £500 for the Princes Trust. I really enjoy writing and plan to produce many more books over the coming years.
