This is something different. Rather than being a book about Reiki for the general public to read, this is a copy of the actual training manual given to Reiki Master Teacher students of Reiki Evolution, the well-known UK Reiki training organisation.
The manual is different for several reasons. Firstly, it is easy-to-read, down-to-earth and really comprehensive, a complete and clear guide to the practice of Reiki at Master Level. The manual is all about Reiki, and Reiki alone, rather than about various New Age practices that have crept into Reiki over the years, like crystals and Angels and spirit guides. And rather than presenting the Western style of Reiki that is covered in most Reiki books on the market (usually described as Traditional Usui Reiki), this manual focuses on the form of Reiki that was taught by Reiki's founder, Mikao Usui, in the 1920s in Japan, and is based on information coming from a group of elderly students of Reiki's founder.
In its original form Reiki was not so much a treatment method as a simple self-healing and self/spiritual-development method which could potentially be used on other people. So in this manual you will (1) learn energy practices that you can use on yourself each day to further your self-healing and your spiritual development - the use of kotodama (Shinto mantras), special Buddhist-style meditations and self-empowerment (self-attunement) methods, (2) you will learn a simple approach to the use of the Reiki symbols and kotodama, (3) you will focus on opening yourself to intuition and explore the power of intuition and intent within Reiki practice, (4) you will learn how to use Reiju empowerments to `connect' students to Reiki at all levels - a wonderful, elegant energy-dance. Original Reiki is all about using a simple and non-dogmatic approach to working on yourself and treating others.
Many people attending Reiki courses do not receive any sort of a course manual, or perhaps just a few sheets of paper, and the Reiki Evolution Master Teacher manual will be of great help to those who have already learned Reiki at RMT level, but who want to have more of a solid and informative exploration of the subject, or who want to learn more about the system that Reiki's founder was teaching, rather than the Western version taught on most Reiki courses.

Unfortunately there are many people out there in the world of Reiki who were not given any sort of manual when they did their training, or were given a manual that leaves a lot to be desired. We believe that it is very important for a student to have detailed instructions that they can refer to whenever they need to, and we have tried to make the course manuals that we give to our students as detailed and comprehensive, and user-friendly, as we can.
We have decided to make our Reiki Evolution course manuals available to anyone who would like to benefit from them.
Who Would Benefit from using these manuals?
These manuals are ideal for people finding out about Reiki for the first time, and who would like detailed and accurate information, presented in a simple, down-to-earth and easily-understandable style. They would also be ideal for Reiki First Degree or Second Degree practitioners, or Reiki Masters and Teachers.
The manuals contain up to date information about Reiki's history, as well as a range of original techniques and approaches that Usui Sensei passed on to a group of his students who are still alive and are in contact with a few people in the West. Many of these techniques and approaches are not yet widely known within the world of Reiki, and they are explained fully in the course manuals, for example hatsurei ho, Usui Sensei's self-treatment meditation, the use of mindfulness, the original form of the Reiki precepts, intuitive working, oneness, a simple way of working with the energies that the Reiki symbols represent, the use of kotodama, Reiju empowerments, defining the hara, and self-empowerment methods.
Reiki Evolution was set up by Taggart King, who trained in Reiki and started running Reiki courses in the late 1990s from bases in Essex. These courses would now be referred to as 'Western-style" since no information had come to us from Japan as yet about Reiki's original Japanese form, and thus Taggart was passing on a variant of what Mrs Takata had taught.
Taggart found that he absolutely loved running Reiki courses and found it so rewarding to see the many positive changes that Reiki was bringing into people's lives. He worked hard to make sure that his courses were good quality, so for example he put together comprehensive and detailed course manuals, at a time when many Reiki courses were not accompanied by any written materials. Taggart went against the grain of most courses by deciding to send these manuals to his students in advance of their course, so they could learn about Reiki at their leisure; most courses at that time involved people turning up knowing very little about Reiki, and their teacher spending a lot of time on a course talking about Reiki. Taggart thought that was a bit of a waste of time: if you are going to be together on a Reiki course, he thought you should be spending your time doing things with energy, not sitting down listening to a teacher talking about things that could have been better assimilated beforehand.
Over time, Taggart added audio CDs with commentary, guided meditations on CD, and even a DVD to his courses so that he was dealing with different people's learning styles. By providing students with a range of materials - text, images, summary sheets, question and answer sheets, audio tracks, video to watch - you actually enhance learning and make it easier for the student to get to grips with the materials, and enhance learning. Taggart has read extensively about 'accelerated learning' techniques and has incorporated these methods into his courses to make learning more interesting, enjoyable and effective.
Small class sizes
Right from the very beginning, Taggart decided to keep his class sizes very small. He always taught four students at a time because of space constraints at the venues he used, though he believed that up to six students would be an acceptable number. Taggart believed that it was very important to give his students his individual attention, and this is simply not possible on larger courses. Some teachers have classes of 15, 30 or even 60-80 students, you see. By keeping the numbers small you have a more relaxed, informal, friendly environment where people are not afraid to ask questions and share their experiences. Too many students and people become self-conscious. Obviously having bigger groups of students means that you generate a higher income, but Taggart decided to go down the route of better quality rather than better profits.
Japanese Reiki comes to the West
Within a couple of years, Taggart had learned the Japanese Reiki techniques that were beginning to be taught in the West, information which was being passed on by teachers like Frank Arjava Petter and Hiroshi Doi. He was also lucky enough to end up carrying out several years of training with an individual who was in contact with a group of elderly students of Reiki's founder, Mikao Usui. Taggart ended up being perhaps the most prominent teacher of Japanese Reiki methods in the UK, and toured the country (and Europe) passing on original Japanese Reiki methods from the surviving students. Taggart has taught these methods to hundreds of Reiki practitioners and Masters and incorporated the original methods into his First Degree, Second Degree and Reiki Master Teacher courses.
Taggart is one of a small number of teachers who are passing on Mikao Usui's original methods, since most Reiki courses are 'Western-style', being based on the teachings of Hawayo Takata, one of Dr Hayashi's students.
