It has given us the opportunity to publish shots that had to be omitted from Volume 1 on grounds of space (ie: the lack of it), and expand the coverage of prime steam locations such as Manchester Victoria and Exchange. But we've gone a little further, covering that period which I refer to as "the wilderness years" between late 1968 and 1973 when the only thing steaming on the main line was a solitary A3 in LNER green livery - and even that small respite lasted only until September 1969, when Flying Scotsman was shipped to America, to begin its ultimately abortive 'trade mission'. Suffering serious withdrawal symptoms, we turned our sights to far-distant foreign lands (well OK- just 26 miles in fact, to the other side of the English Channel) where the spirit of steam was far from dead.
