Nenthorn was Otago's last quartz gold-mining rush. Its rapid rise to prominence was matched only by its equally rapid decline: discovery, boom and bust all occurred within the few short years, 1888-1891. The recovery of the records of the Warden's Courts of Central Otago, and the discovery of the liquidation records of some of Nenthorn's ill-fated companies provided an opportunity to study in detail the people and processes involved in the creation, management and collapse of a mining system.
