In 1936 I bought a thirty-five millimeter Contax camera. I began experimenting on my own, trying out different films, developers and techniques. The other camera I used was the miniature Speed Graphic. As a freelance photographer, my work was published in Look, Life, Coast Magazine and the New York Mirror. I did advertising for the Convention and Tourist Bureau of San Francisco, Lord and Thomas, and a weekly advertising page for the Oakland Post-Enquirer. San Francisco was not the most productive place for a young guy in advertising. It was a struggle, The jobs, while interesting, were few and far between, In 1943 I became a staff photographer for the San Francisco Examiner and remained there until retirement five years later.
