Any field of study has premises whose purpose is to tie it together into a coherent whole. Reflexology too has principles that serve to unify it as an integrated system. These principles, although simple, make a profound statement about the body and its functions. Foot reflexology is the study and practice of working reflexes in the feet that correspond to other parts of the body. With specific hand and finger techniques, reflexology causes responses (relaxation) in corresponding parts of the body. Relaxation is the first step to the body s return to a state of equilibrium, or homeostasis, in which circulation can flow unimpeded to supply nutrients and oxygen to the cells. Research has demonstrated such change resulting from reflexology work. A change of blood flow to the kidneys was shown before and after reflexology work. Improvement in blood flow to the intestines was also demonstrated. With the restoration of homeostasis, the body s organs and muscles, which are actually aggregations of cells, may then return to a normal state of function as well.
