Sand hills and swamp once covered much of the area now known as Greenwich village. The land was wild and overgrown with brambles and rushes. A small trout stream wound along the edge of the region. To the east, an ancient Indian Trail "The Weckquasgeek Path" led north through the entire length of Manhattan. A smaller sand path veered west from this trail and ended at the Hudson River.
