Synopsis

Ramona and Round About is a history of those who have occupied the land, and those who helped build the Ramona community to what it is today. It tells of the people of Santa Maria and neighboring valleys, starting with the earliest Indians, tracing the white occupants from the Mexican rancho grantees, through the first area settlers in Ballena, the start of the new town of Nuevo (later renamed Ramona), into the twentieth century and contemporary times. Several chapters examine specific aspects of Ramona's heritage such as the one room schoolhouse, early routes and transportation, water development, law and order, public services, gemstone and gold mining and the small town newspaper. This is the author's second history of the area. His first, Off The Main Road, a history of the San Vicente and Barona Rancho, was a San Diego Historical Society, Institute of History award winner in 1984. Eagle Peak Publishing Company is pleased to bring to the public another book about local history by Charles R. LeMenager.
