"Hell, these rice paddies smell no different than the ones in Korea," remarks Marine First Sergeant Jaunal in this fascinating account of his Vietnam tour. An "old salt" of two previous wars, Jaunal emphasizes the similarity of all battlefields, and his lean, mature narrative impressively conveys the perspective of a senior NCO in the twilight of his career, his own baptism in combat long past. Now his work is largely in the relatively safe rear area headquarters, persuading wayward Marines to write home to their parents, enduring rocket attacks, visiting wounded Marines in the hospital, supervising letters to next-of-kin and inventorying their personal effects. Characterization is shallow (we only learn names and where home is back in the States) and the language is too polite ("cripes" instead of authentic lingo), but there's a wisdom here that surpasses the majority of angry memoirs by young servicemen. Highly recommended.
